The major event in the IAPR calendar is the biennial International Conference on Pattern Recognition, which attracts scientists, researchers, and practitioners in the field from all over the world; here they are able to listen, to learn, to educate, and to exchange ideas with their colleagues.

Conferences have been held, and are proposed, in Washington (1972), Copenhagen (1974), Coronado (1976), Kyoto (1978), Miami (1980), Munich (1982), Montreal (1984), Paris (1986), Rome (1988), Atlantic City (1990), The Hague (1992), Jerusalem (1994), Vienna (1996), Brisbane (1998), Barcelona (2000), Quebec (2002), Cambridge (2004), Hong Kong (2006) and Tampa (2008).
